Annual Potters Market
year two for pottery by ariel at the apm
The Annual Potter’s Market (APM) is a pottery show held each year at the Southfield Pavilion. The 17,000 square foot sales floor is filled with all kinds of work, from holiday-themed pieces to timeless wares for everyday use. The show is completely staffed by the artists who are participating, and it draws around 8,000 clay lovers each year. With over 100 artists showcasing their work, you’ll find an incredible variety of styles, techniques, and experience levels represented.
Visitors can expect to see both functional and decorative pieces, including tiles, mugs, cups, vases, bowls, wall hangings, and larger works like birdbaths and garden art. There really is something for everyone at the APM, and it’s the perfect place to shop for one-of-a-kind, handmade gifts during the holiday season.
Last year was my first time participating in the market, and I brought over 100 pieces to the show. It was also my first real experience with production pottery, which meant I was creating a much larger volume of work than usual. That process helped me refine my techniques and strengthen my favorite staple forms. Most of my inventory included mugs, cups, and ornaments.
This year, I plan to bring all of those items again, along with some larger mixing bowls and matcha bowl sets. If time allows, I may even have a few dinnerware plates available for purchase. I am so excited to be part of the show again and to connect with so many fellow clay lovers.
I really enjoy this show because it gives me the chance to meet and connect with other artists from across Michigan, and it’s one of the few events that draws customers who are specifically looking for pottery. I love meeting my customers in person, hearing their stories, and seeing which pieces catch their eye. The APM is also a wonderful place to find inspiration and learn from more experienced sellers. Producing pottery is one thing, but learning how to sell and market your work is its own skill that takes time and practice to develop.
Prices at the APM range from about $5 to $500 and beyond, depending on the size of the piece, the materials used, and the artist’s techniques. This wide range of prices and styles means you can spend time browsing to find the perfect piece for you, but it also makes the show accessible to everyone. As I mentioned earlier, there’s truly something for everyone at the APM.
